The Gist of James

This past Sunday we started our study in the Book of James. For those of you who couldn't make it here is some of what you missed from our introduction:

Who Wrote It:
James (1:1), the brother of Jesus (Mt. 13:55; Jn. 7:2-5; 1Cor. 15:7); leader of the Jerusalem church (Gal. 1:19, 2:9; Acts 12: 17, Acts 15)

When Was It Written:
Some believe it to have been written as early as A.D. 45. If true it would tie with Galatians as being the earliest written book of the NT.

To Whom:
Possibly written to Jewish Christians experiencing “trials and difficulties” throughout the Roman world.

Purpose for Writing:
To challenge Christians to walk the walk of the talk that they talk. Being a Christian means living like one. Christians shouldn’t gossip, show favoritism, or allow for injustices to happen. James reminds us how to live our lives 24/7 as authentic disciples of Christ.

Main Point:
Authentic faith is revealed by good works.

Key Passage:
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

Side Points:
Stress, prayer, anger, grace, conflict, jealousy

On Sunday (June 10) we will take a closer look at James 1:1-18. Hope to see you there.

Summer Is Here

ELEMENT523 exists to give students the opportunity to WORSHIP God, GROW in spiritual maturity, SERVE others, BUILD strong relationships, and to TELL the world about Jesus Christ.

Summer is officially here!!! 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, "Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again." This is the verse that you chose as our ministry's theme verse. I think that it sums up what we want to happen in our ministry and over the summer. We want to meet God and we want Him to change us. We want to be made whole- spiritually and physically- in Christ Jesus. In everything that we do we will keep this verse in mind.

Here are the Top 5 Things you need to know:

1) We had a great time at the Cain's house last night for our Kick-Off Summer Devo!!! Thank you to the Cains, the Justices, and the Warners for making last night a huge success.

2) Work Camp begins tonight (5/28). We will leave the building at 5:30pm to join the other churches at Park Row for mixers and worship. You will get to meet your work groups tonight and will begin to get focused and ready for the work ahead. I am excited about work camp and I know that you are as well.

3) I need your Uplift forms ASAP. Please return them to the church just as soon as you can. If I could get everybody's forms by Wednesday, June 13th that would be extremely helpful.

4) Just because school's out that doesn't mean that learning should stop. We have a great offering of Bible study for you this summer. On Sunday mornings we will all be looking at the Book of James. James is a great little book that can teach you what a Christian life looks like when lived out. On Wednesday nights we will be walking through the Gospel Journey. The class will take you through the entire Bible and give you a bird's eye veiw of the Good News that God created you, died for you, and wants to give you a new life in Christ.

5) Please, make sure that you bring your Bibles on Sundays and Wednesdays. It is hard to teach from the Bible when only a handful of people have theirs with them.

I hope everyone has a great week. Thanks for letting me be your minister.
